Tryouts

Tryout Dates:

  • Fall sports can begin tryouts on Wednesday, August 8th, 2018 for the 2018-2019 school year. Some sports may not start on this date – see below for sport-specific information. 
    • Poms will hold its tryouts in May/June for the Fall season. See below for details.
  • All winter sports begin tryouts on Thursday, November 15th, 2018 for the 2018-2019 school year.
  • All spring sports begin tryouts on Friday, March 1st, 2019 for the 2018-2019 school year.

2018 – Wed. August 8
2019 – Wed. August 14
2020 – Wed. August 13

Here is what you need to know:

Eligibility:

  • Grades – returning HS students must have at least a 2.0 and no more than 1 E on their most recent report card. Incoming 9th grade students and students new to MCPS are automatically academically eligible.
  • Age – you must be under the age of 19 as of the first day of the school year.
  • Required Forms: ONLINE REGISTRATION will be available in 2018-2019. Winter 2018-2019 online registration will open on October 1st through the myMCPS Parent Portal (MCPS Winter Registration Memo). We are asking everyone to register for sports online this year. Parents who need login information may contact Jared Fribush, Athletic Director. You will still need an updated PHYSICAL FORM. (Forms are still available for download, but we are strongly urging everyone to register online.)

All candidates for Blake Athletics must register online (or complete all required forms) in order to participate on the first day of tryouts. For additional information, please contact the individual coaches or Jared Fribush, Athletic Director. Fall 2018 Sports

(Tryouts will start on Wednesday, August 8. 2018 unless otherwise noted)
Parents of interested students must register online before the start of tryouts (online registration will open on July 16th).

Cheerleading: Contact Varsity Coaches Vicki White and Sheila Saunders or JV Coach Bryanna Simpson for more information. The cheer coaches will be holding optional conditioning workouts, open to all Blake students, during the summer. The tentative schedule is Mondays and Thursdays from 4:30pm-7pm in the Small Gym. Contact the coaches for information and a schedule. Tryout clinics for Cheerleading (JV and Varsity) will be held from 9am-12pm on Wednesday, August 8th and Thursday, August 9th. The final tryout will be held at 3pm on Friday, August 10th. 

Cross Country: Contact Head Coach Petros Welday or Assistant Coach Stephanie Staub for information. All interested cross country runners should report to the track on Wednesday, August 8th from 10am-12pm. Practices will continue to be held at that time for the remainder of the first week (August 8th-10th) and through the second week (August 13th-17th).

Field Hockey: Contact Varsity Coach Patrick Howley or JV Coach Nicole Lertora for more information. Tryouts for Field Hockey will begin on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 from 4pm-7pm. Tryouts will continue from 8:30am-11:30am from 8/9-8/11. A tentative August calendar can be seen here: Bengals August Field Hockey 2018.

Football: Contact Varsity Coach DeShawn Anderson or JV Coach Bryon Marshall for additional information. The Football coaches will be holding optional conditioning workouts, open to all Blake students, during the summer. The tentative schedule is Mondays through Thursdays, from 6pm-8:15pm in the weight room at Blake until July 20th. Contact the coaches for information and a schedule. Football will be meeting on Tuesday, August 7th to distribute equipment (Seniors at 1pm, Juniors at 2pm and Sophomores/Freshmen at 3pm). Golf: Contact Golf coach Sam Silverman for information. Blake’s first tryout will be on Tuesday, August 14th. Interested students should meet at Hampshire Greens Golf Course at 12pm (12:30pm tee time). Tryouts will also be held on Wednesday, August 15th (12:55pm at Hampshire Greens) and Thursday, August 16th (1:20pm at Hampshire Greens). A complete practice and match schedule can be seen here

Poms: Contact Poms coach Brianna Lopez for information. Tryouts for the 2018-2019 Pom squad were held in May/June 2018. However, we will be holding an additional tryout on August 13th, 14th and 15th from 3-5pm in the C146 Dance Studio at Blake. Information can be found here.

Soccer (Boys): Contact Varsity Coach Nougais Metellus or JV Coach Andres Moreno for more information. The Boys Soccer coaches will be holding occasional optional conditioning workouts, open to all Blake students, during the summer. The tentative schedule is Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm-8:30pm on the practice field. Tryouts for Boys Soccer will begin on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 from 9am-12pm on the practice field behind the stadium. Tryouts will also be held on August 9th, 10th and 11th from 9am-12pm. Practices will then be held from 3pm-5pm starting on Monday, August 13th. 

Soccer (Girls): Contact Varsity Coach Jenna Essenmacher or JV Coach Kristina Valerio for information. The Girls Soccer coaches will be holding occasional optional conditioning workouts, open to all Blake students, during the summer (calendar posted here). Tryouts for Girls Soccer will begin on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 from 9am-12pm on the practice field behind the stadium. A complete August calendar can be seen here.

Tennis (Girls): Girls Tennis will become a Spring sport in 2018-2019, and will no longer be offered in the Fall.

Volleyball (Girls): Contact Varsity Coach Madeline Chervenak or JV Coach Pete Leon Guerrero for more information. The Girls Volleyball coaches will be holding occasional optional conditioning workouts, open to all Blake students, during the summer. The tentative schedule is Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8am-9am, meeting outside. Contact the coaches for information and a schedule. Winter 2018-2019 Sports

(Tryouts will start on Thursday, November 15, 2018 unless otherwise noted)

Basketball (Boys): Online registration is now open (information here). Contact Varsity Coach Dondrell Whitmore or JV Coach Rick Cook for more information. Update: Tryouts will begin on Friday, November 16th. Varsity Boys will hold tryouts on 11/16 from 5pm-7pm in the Main Gym and JV Boys will hold tryouts on 11/16 from 3pm-5pm in the Small Gym. Tryouts will continue on Saturday, 11/17 from 7-9am for Varsity Boys and from 9-11am for JV Boys. 

Basketball (Girls): Online registration is now open (information here). Contact Varsity Coach Kenny Prather or JV Coach Kathy Boehlert for more information. Update: Tryouts will begin on Friday, November 16th from 3pm-5pm for all interested players. Tryouts will continue from 9-11am on Saturday, 11/17. 

Bocce (Corollary): Contact Coach Phil Barnes for information. Online registration is now open (information here). Information about the MCPS Corollary Sports program can be found here. Practices will begin the week of December 3rd.

Cheerleading: Online registration is now open (information here). There will not be additional tryouts for the winter season. MCPS also only offers Varsity Cheer (no JV Cheer) in the Winter season. Update: The first day of Winter Cheer will be on Tuesday, 11/20 from 4:30-6:30pm in the Cafeteria. Contact Varsity Coaches Victoria White and Sheila Saunders for information. Students who participated in the Fall and will continue participating in the Winter must be registered online. 

Indoor Track & Field: Online registration is now open (information here). Contact Head Coach Brandon Tynes or Assistant Coaches Aharon Conerly and Petros Welday for information. Optional conditioning workouts are being held Mondays-Thursdays from 3pm-5pm, meeting on the track. Update: Practices will begin on Friday, November 16th, and will be held on weekdays from 3pm-5pm. Be sure to bring clothing and footwear for both indoor and outdoor practices. Practice location will depend on the weather (either the track or the hallway outside of the Media Center). 

Poms: Online registration is now open (information here). Contact Poms coach Brianna Lopez for information. Poms will not hold additional tryouts in the Winter. Students continuing from the Fall season into the winter season must register again online. 

Swim & Dive: Online registration is now open (information here). Contact Coach Ryan Burnsky for information. Swim practices will be held from 3-4pm on Tuesdays (at Fairland Aquatic Center) and Thursdays (at Olney Swim Center. Dive practices will be held on Wednesdays from 3-4:30pm at MLK Swim Center. Update: Swim Practices will begin on Tuesday, November 20th and Dive Practices will begin on Wednesday, November 28th. Additional information about the MCPS Swim & Dive program can be found here. Wrestling: Online registration is now open (information here). Contact Varsity Head Coach Rasheim Smith or JV Coach Jenkins Monzey for information. Update: Practices will begin on Friday, November 16th and will be held from 3-5pm in the wrestling room.   All students interested in participating in wrestling must be weight-certified. Information about the weight certification program can be found on the MCPS Athletics website

Spring 2019 Sports

(Tryouts will start on Friday, March 1, 2019 unless otherwise noted. Online registration will open approximately one month before tryouts.)

Baseball: Contact Varsity Coach Steve Murfin for more information. The JV Coach for Spring 2019 is TBA. Tryouts will begin on Friday, March 1st.

Gymnastics (Girls): Contact Coach Victoria White for information. Tryouts will begin on Tuesday, March 5th. 

Lacrosse (Boys): Contact Varsity Coach Jim Potts or JV Coach Andrew Bader for information. Optional conditioning workouts are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:45pm-3:45pm (meet near the tennis courts while the weather is still nice). Tryouts will begin on Friday, March 1st. 

Lacrosse (Girls): Contact Varsity Coach Allison Baisey for information. The JV Coach for Spring 2019 is TBA. Tryouts will begin on Friday, March 1st. 

Softball (Girls): Contact Varsity Coach Nicole Wallace, Assistant Varsity Coach Dave Schipani for more information. The JV Coach for Spring 2019 is TBA. Tryouts will begin on Friday, March 1st. 

Tennis (Boys): Contact Coach Jordan Rowell for more information. Tryouts will begin on Friday, March 1st. 

Tennis (Girls): Girls Tennis will officially become a Spring sport in 2018-2019. Contact Coach Rich Burke for more information. Tryouts will begin on Friday, March 1st. 

Track & Field (Coed): Contact Head Coach Brandon Tynes or Assistant Coaches DeShawn AndersonAharon Conerly and Petros Welday for information. Optional conditioning workouts are being held Mondays-Thursdays from 3pm-5pm, meeting on the track. Outdoor Track & Field practices will be held from 3-5pm every weekday, starting on Friday, March 1st. 

Volleyball (Boys): Contact Coach Dana Mitchell for information. Tryouts will begin on Friday, March 1st.

Volleyball (Coed): Contact Coach David Fitzgerald for information. Tryouts will begin on Friday, March 1st.
