Multiple Teams · New Coaches Hired for 2018-2019!

The Blake Athletic Department is pleased to announce the addition of three new coaches for the 2018-2019 school year!

Petros Welday has been hired as the Head Coach of the Blake Cross Country program. Coach Welday brings with him experience as a runner and a coach. He ran Cross Country and Track & Field at Archbishop Carroll High School before participating at the collegiate level at Hagerstown Community College. Coach Welday was a silver medalist at the USATF Junior Olympics in the 1500m and 5000m events. Previously, Coach Welday served as a volunteer assistant coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, DC. Lansana Sylla has been hired as the JV Wrestling coach for the Winter 2018-2019 season. Coach Sylla will join Varsity Coach Rasheim Smith on the Blake Wrestling program staff. Coach Sylla wrestled at Blair High School and has since volunteered on the coaching staff at his alma mater. Coach Sylla brings experience working with the heavier wrestling weights. Rich Burke has been named the Girls Tennis coach for the Spring 2019 season. Coach Burke currently serves as the Fall Assistant Athletic Director and is a Physical Education teacher at Blake. He has experience coaching a number of sports in MCPS, including soccer and wrestling. This will be Coach Burke’s first opportunity to coach tennis at the high school level, but he does have experience teaching the net sports class, and will be doing so at Blake in 2018-2019.
