The Blake Athletic Department held its annual Athletic Awards Night on Tuesday, May 22nd. Over 250 awards were presented on stage to student-athletes from each of our teams.

Every team (Varsity and JV) presented up to five awards on stage – a Scholar-Athlete Award, a Sportsmanship Award and up to three other awards selected by the coaches. Award winners are listed here.

Additionally, Blake recognized student-athletes who participated in each season (Fall, Winter and Spring) with a Three Season Athlete Award. Recipients are listed here.

Finally, the Athletic Department recognized the Male and Female Freshman Athletes of the Year, a Male and Female Bengal Award winner, the Male and Female Athletes of the Year and the Coach of the Year.

Jonik Surprenant and Ella Jacobs were recognized as Freshman Athletes of the Year. Jonik had an outstanding first season swimming at Blake, which included qualifying for States in the 200 yard and 500 yard Freestyle events, and placing in both. Jonik made the All-County team in the 500 yard Freestyle event. Ella was an impact first year member of the Cross Country and Track & Field teams. She became the first Cross Country Region Champion in school history, winning the 3A West Region title. She also participated in Swim & Dive this season.

Blake also presents the Bengal Award to one male and one female athlete, based on hard work, leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship and positive contributions to Blake Athletics. This year’s recipients were junior David Hill and senior Alexandra Konzmann. David was a member of the Boys Basketball and Baseball programs, while Alex was a member of the Girls Basketball and Girls Soccer programs.

Our Coach of the Year Award was presented to Coach DeShawn Anderson of the Blake Football program. Coach Anderson was recognized as the MCPS 3A/2A Division Coach of the Year by his peers earlier this year. He led the Bengals to a 7-4 record this year, equaling the school record for wins in a season. Blake qualified for the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Coach Anderson is also and Assistant Coach with the Track & Field program at Blake.

Our final presentation was for the Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Aaron Stanton (Swim & Dive) and Nicole Kidwiler (Field Hockey and Softball) won the award for the 2017-2018 school year.

Aaron capped off his four year Blake career by setting school records in the 200 yard IM and 100 yard Breaststroke and tying the school record in the 100 yard Freestyle. Aaron was Region Champion in the 100 yard Freestyle, and placed highly in the prestigious Metros and the Maryland State Championship meet in multiple events. Aaron made the All-County team in the 50 and 100 yard Freestyle events. Aaron will swim at Williams College next year.

Nicole was injured for part of the Field Hockey season, but was named 2nd Team All-Division and helped the Bengals to Division and Region Championships. Nicole was also a four year member of the Varsity Softball team. She was a captain and the starting pitcher, and led the team in hitting. The Bengals earned a Division Championship this season as well. Nicole will play softball at Towson University next year.
