Tryout Dates:

  • Fall sports can begin tryouts on Wednesday, August 9th, 2017 for the 2017-2018 school year. Some sports may not start on this date – see below for sport-specific information. 
    • Poms will hold its tryouts in May/June for the Fall season. See below for details.
  • All winter sports begin tryouts on Wednesday, November 15th, 2017 for the 2017-2018 school year.
  • All spring sports begin tryouts on Thursday, March 1st, 2018 for the 2017-2018 school year.

Note: Upcoming Fall Sports tryout dates are listed below:

2017 – Wed. August 9
2018 – Wed. August 8
2019 – Wed. August 14
2020 – Wed. August 13

Here is what you need to know:

Eligibility:

  • Grades – returning HS students must have at least a 2.0 and no more than 1 E on their most recent report card. Incoming 9th grade students and students new to MCPS are automatically academically eligible.
  • Age – you must be under the age of 19 as of the first day of the school year.
  • Required Forms: All required forms must be submitted on the first day of tryouts or the student may not participate. 

All candidates for Blake Athletics must complete all required forms in order to participate on the first day of tryouts. For additional information, please contact the individual coaches or Jared Fribush, Athletic Director. Fall 2017 Sports

(Tryouts will start on August 9, 2017 unless otherwise noted)

 

Cheerleading: Contact Varsity Coaches Vicki White and Sheila Saunders or JV Coach Bryanna Simpson for more information. *Tryouts for Cheerleading will be held in August. This is a change from the past, when Cheerleading tryouts were held in May/June. Conditioning workouts are held throughout the summer to prepare for the upcoming tryouts and season. Information and schedule is here. Tryouts will follow the following schedule: On Wednesday, August 9th and Thursday, August 10th, there will be clinics (8:30am-11:30am jumps/tumbles/stunts and 2:30pm-3:30pm review). The tryout will be on Friday, August 11th at the same times as the previous days.

Cross Country: The first day of practice will be on Wednesday, August 9th at 8am on the Blake Track. We will be holding conditioning workouts during the summer on Tuesdays and Thursdays – more information can be found here. Contact Head Coach Andrew Brodeur or Assistant Coach Stephanie Staub for information. 

Field Hockey: Contact Varsity Coach Patrick Howley or JV Coach Melina Latona for more information. A tentative schedule for August tryouts and preseason can be seen here: Blake Field Hockey August 2017. The first day of tryouts will be on Wednesday, August 9th from 4pm-7pm on the Field Hockey field (inside of the track). 

Football: Contact Varsity Coach DeShawn Anderson or JV Coach Bryon Marshall for additional information. Information about summer workouts and passing league opportunities can be seen here. All students interested in participating in Football should plan on turning in required forms on Monday, August 7th from 9am-1pm. Students should come to Blake on Tuesday, August 8th from 9am-1pm for equipment distribution. The first day of practice will be on Wednesday, August 9th from 5pm-8pm. 

Golf: Contact Golf coach Sam Silverman for information. MCPS assigns schools practice times at golf courses. Blake’s first tryout/practice will be on Tuesday, August 15th at Hampshire Greens Golf Course. Students are expected to meet at 11:45am on 8/15 at Hampshire Greens with required forms, for a tee time of 12:30pm. Students should provide their own clubs and balls for practices and tryouts. Poms: Contact Poms coach Brianna Lopez for information. Pom Tryouts for the 2017-2018 squad were held in May/June.

Soccer (Boys): Contact Varsity Coach Nougais Metellus or JV Coach Andres Moreno for more information. Conditioning workout for interested players are being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm-4:45pm. Information and schedule is here. Tryouts will be held from Wednesday, August 9th through Saturday, August 12th from 9am-12pm on the practice field behind the stadium. Practices will then be held from 3pm-5pm starting on Monday, August 14th through the end of the season.

Soccer (Girls): Contact Varsity Coach Jenna Essenmacher or JV Coach Kristina Valerio for information. We will collect paperwork and required forms on Tuesday, August 8th from 9am-10:30am in the Blake Gym Lobby. Tryouts will be held from Wednesday, August 9th through Friday, August 11th from 8:30am-11am on the practice field (behind the stadium). Practices will be held at 8:30am August 14th-18th and August 21st-22nd. Practices will then be from 4-6pm. A tentative August 2017 schedule can be seen here.

Tennis (Girls): The first day of tryouts will be on Monday, August 14th from 3-5pm. Contact Coach Mike Krawczel for information. 

Volleyball (Girls): Tryouts will be held Wednesday, August 9th through Friday, August 11th from 9am-12pm in the Main Gym. Winter 2017-2018 Sports

(Tryouts will start on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 unless otherwise noted)

 

Basketball (Boys): Contact Varsity Coach Dondrell Whitmore or JV Coach Kenny Prather for information. Conditioning workouts are being held throughout the summer. Information and schedule is here.
